AQUAPORIN ASIA SECURES A 2,5 MILLION $ SGD R&D GRANT FROM THE SINGAPOREAN GOVERNMENT 13.10.2014

The 2,5 million $ SGD National Research Foundation (NRF) grant, which is administered by the Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI) under the Public Utilities Board (PUB), will go towards the development of aquaporin-based biomimetic forward osmosis membranes in Singapore.
  • The National Research Foundation (NRF) - a department within the Singapore Prime Minister's office with the mission to help set the national direction for research and development (R&D) by developing policies, plans and strategies for research, innovation and enterprise.

  • The Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI)- an inter-agency setup with broad representation in key environmental and economic government agencies in Singapore and a goal of spearheading the development of the Singapore environment and water industry.
  • The Public Utilities Board (PUB) - as the national water agency, PUB is responsible for the collection, production, distribution and reclamation of water in Singapore. PUB is actively involved in water technology R&D driven by the desire to (a) increase water resources, (b) keep costs competitive, and (c) manage water quality and security.

Starting November 3rd 2014, Aquaporin Asia will commence a 3 year R&D project (1301-IRIS-02) funded by a 2,5 million $ SGD National Research Foundation (NRF) grant administered by the Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI) under the Public Utilities Board (PUB). The project's title is: "Aquaporin based biomimetic forward osmosis membranes: from lab scale production of membranes to pilot production and industrial test bedding of membrane modules". The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Singapore Membrane Technology Center (SMTC) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and DHI Singapore along with numerous external collaborators.

With the commencement of the NRF R&D project, Aquaporin Asia has reached another major milestone in its ongoing activities in Singapore towards maturing and commercializing the Aquaporin Inside™ membrane technology - a technology pioneered in a recent (2009-2013) research collaboration between Aquaporin, the Singapore Membrane Technology Center (SMTC) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and DHI Singapore funded by Singapore's Environment and Water Industry Development Council (EWI).

Says Mark Perry, Primary Project Investigator and Chief Operating Officer of Aquaporin Asia: "The current NRF R&D grant is a strong testament to Singapore's continued support and commercial interest in developing aquaporin-based biomimetic water membranes for industrial water treatment. The total project budget will exceed 5 million $ SGD over the next 3-year period allowing the project consortium to develop improved Aquaporin Inside™ forward osmosis membranes, membrane modules, and FO membrane systems as well as invest in automated production equipment, which will contribute tremendously to accelerating the maturation and commercialization of the Aquaporin Inside™ FO membrane technology".
