Aquaporin Asia signs MOU with Darco Water Technologies Limited on joint piloting of the Aquaporin Inside™ forward osmosis technology in Zero Liquid Discharge systems for treatment of industrial wastewater

    • The Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI)- an inter-agency setup with broad representation in key environmental and economic government agencies in Singapore and a goal of spearheading the development of the Singapore environment and water industry.
    • The Public Utilities Board (PUB) - as the national water agency, PUB is responsible for the collection, production, distribution and reclamation of water in Singapore. PUB is actively involved in water technology R&D driven by the desire to (a) increase water resources, (b) keep costs competitive, and (c) manage water quality and security.
Starting November 3rd 2014, Aquaporin Asia commenced a 3-year R&D project (1301-IRIS-02) titled: "Aquaporin based biomimetic forward osmosis membranes: from lab scale production of membranes to pilot production and industrial test bedding of membrane modules". The research grant is supported by the Singapore National Research Foundation under its Environmental & Water Technologies Strategic Research Programme and administered by the Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI) of the PUB. The project involves collaborations from NEWRI and its Singapore Membrane Technology Centre at Nanyang Technological University as well as DHI Water & Environment (S) along with numerous external collaborators. The end goal of the project is to demonstrate the cost saving potential of the Aquaporin Inside™ Forward Osmosis Technology through industrial test bedding.

One such collaborator is Darco Water Technologies Limited, an SGX listed Singapore-based expert in engineered water purification and wastewater treatment systems. Recently, Darco Water Technologies Limited and Aquaporin Asia signed a Memorandum of Understanding for joint piloting and test-bedding.

More specifically, Darco Water Technologies Limited and Aquaporin Asia aim to jointly pilot a low-energy Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems for industrial wastewater treatment based on the Aquaporin Inside™ Forward Osmosis Technology. The application of the Aquaporin Inside™ FO membrane serves as a pre-concentration step in ZLD Systems prior to final water removal in for examples evaporators.
