Aquaporin Asia signs LOI with W.O.G Technologies Pte. Ltd. on joint proof-of-concept studies in which the Aquaporin Inside™ forward osmosis technology is applied in Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems and wastewater treatment processes.

    • The Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI)- an inter-agency setup with broad representation in key environmental and economic government agencies in Singapore and a goal of spearheading the development of the Singapore environment and water industry.
    • The Public Utilities Board (PUB) - as the national water agency, PUB is responsible for the collection, production, distribution and reclamation of water in Singapore. PUB is actively involved in water technology R&D driven by the desire to (a) increase water resources, (b) keep costs competitive, and (c) manage water quality and security.
Starting November 3rd 2014, Aquaporin Asia commenced a 3-year R&D project (1301-IRIS-02) funded by Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF) with a grant of 2.5 million SGD under its Environment & Water Research Programme and administered by PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency. The project's title is: "Aquaporin based biomimetic forward osmosis membranes: from lab scale production of membranes to pilot production and industrial test bedding of membrane modules". The end goal of the project is to demonstrate the cost saving potential of the Aquaporin Inside Forward Osmosis Technology through industrial test bedding. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Singapore Membrane Technology Center (SMTC) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and DHI Singapore along with numerous external collaborators.  
 
One such collaborator is W.O.G Technologies Pte. Ltd. (WOG), a world leader in providing delegated management of water, wastewater services, and renewable energy generation for industrial and municipal clients. Recently, WOG and Aquaporin Asia signed a Letter of Intent for joint proof-of-concept studies under Aquaporin Asia’s 3 year NRF funded forward osmosis project.
 
More specifically, WOG and Aquaporin Asia aim to initiate proof-of-concept studies in which the Aquaporin Inside™ Forward Osmosis Technology is applied as a pre-concentration step in Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems and wastewater treatment processes within primarily, but not limited to, pharmaceutical, molasses based (bioethanol, bio refinery), and textile industries.

Says Sunil Rajan, President of WOG: "We believe that Forward Osmosis is an efficient pre-treatment technology for attaining ZLD or recovering maximum water in recycling System. As a pre-treatment, forward osmosis can lengthen reverse osmosis membranes’ lifespan and promote overall system health by reducing the needed disinfectants and other pre-treatment options. Forward osmosis will be the future of water recycling technologies.  FO, having a lower membrane fouling propensity than RO, can add value for end users when treating challenging feeds (High TDS and high membrane fouling propensity). We strongly believe that WOG in association with Aquaporin Asia and the Aquaporin Group on developing process solutions for critical effluents will go extra miles by offering end-to-end solution to the industry"
